Clinical and pharmacological analysis of the effectiveness of topical antiseptic in relieving symptoms of acute pharyngitis

https://doi.org/10.21518/ms2026-154

Abstract

Introduction. One of the key issues in the treatment of various forms of pharyngitis is the priority use of topical antiseptics. Aim. To evaluate the effectiveness of the inclusion of a topical antiseptic drug from the group of quaternary ammonium cationic compounds in the complex therapy of acute pharyngitis.

Мaterials and methods. A prospective randomized controlled outpatient trial included 63 patients aged 22–45 years (M = 33.5 ± 11.5) with unspecified acute pharyngitis (J02.9). All participants received standard therapy: in the main group (n = 31), in contrast to the control group (n = 32), a 0.01% solution of benzyldimethyl-myristoylamino-propylammonium was additionally prescribed in the form of irrigation or rinsing 3–4 times a day for 7 days. The effectiveness of treatment was assessed by the dynamics of the pharyngoscopic picture, the severity of complaints on a visual analog scale and quality of life indicators according to the SF-36 questionnaire at the initial visit, on the 3rd and 7th days of treatment.

Results and discussion. It was noted that the addition of a local antiseptic from the group of quaternary ammonium cationic compounds in the complex therapy of acute pharyngitis was accompanied by a faster decrease in the total severity of symptoms according to VAS: from 61 to 23 points by day 3 and up to 4 points by day 7 against 52 and 30 points, respectively, in the control group. The most pronounced improvement was noted in the parameters of sore throat, tickling, feeling of a lump in the throat, cough, sleep disorders and general weakness. After the course of therapy, the increase in the total SF-36 quality of life index was 179.8 points in the main group and 69.2 points in the control group.

Conclusions. The addition of benzyldimethyl-myristoylamino-propylammonium solution to standard treatment of acute pharyngitis in adults increases the clinical effectiveness of treatment, promotes faster relief of symptoms, improves the pharyngoscopic picture and quality of life of patients compared with standard therapy without topical antiseptic.
